Winter by Marissa Meyer

Winter is the fourth and final book in the Lunar Chronicles by Merissa Meyer needless to say if you have not read books one through three do not read any further as you will be spoiled!

I have full reviews on Cinder, Scarlet and Cress if you would like to check them out.

As with all of the books in this series we are introduced to our fourth and final main character Winter. Winter is Queen Lavana’s stepdaughter and the Lunar Princess, she is regarded as the most beautiful ad adored Luna of them all making her a threat to Queen Lavana.

I actually LOVED Winters character, she had just the right amount of Crazy to make her loveable had she been completely sane I think the whole “She sooooo beautiful, she sooooo Amazing etc” would have really started to grate on me and I probably would have joined Lavana in wanting to kill her. But Marissa did a fantastic job at making her loveable and in a strange way relatable. Winters relationship with Jacin was sweet and again worked well in making her more likeable. Some of my favourite interactions in this book where those between Scarlet and Winter, Scarlet didn’t treat Winter like a china doll she treated her like a normal person who at times just need to be told to get her blooming act together.

I have said this before and I will say it again, one the best things about this series is how distinguishable all of the characters are even when they are all together, even in Winter when the dynamics of the group are constantly changing I still knew who’s voice I was hearing. Marissa Meyer did a great job of keeping to the original story arc for each set of characters and kept each character true to their original form.

Levana really came into her own Evil in this book, I have always said she is the epitome of pure Evil in this series and she is someone that I loved to hate. She was pure evil and willing to do anything and everything to keep her power and place on the throne.  I loved how I was kept on the edge of my seat with her, just when I thought she had done the most despicable thing she could do she would go and sink to a new sickening low……….. it was fantastic.

For the most part I was completely sucked into this story the world building for Lunar was absolutely fantastic. However for me personally the book was just far too long and too repetitive. The story didn’t need every single member of the “team” to get separated from the group, abducted and get tortured for the most part these scenes were necessary but the majority of these sections where too predictable, just plain exhausting and took away from the story.

Something I loved about this series was the complex romantic relationships that have been developing over the course of all four books. Each couple is completely different to the other and have their own unique “romantic storyline” making them interesting and fun to read.  Marissa Meyer did an amazing job of creating some truly SWOONE worthy interactions with these couples that leave you giggling like a school girl. That being said at times I felt like there was too much focus on the “relationships” and not enough focus on taking out Queen Lavana.

My favourite scene from this entire book was the final battle between Cinder and Lavana, the whole scene was beautifully crafted and made to leaving you on the edge of your seat, scared of turning the page in fear of seeing who survived.

Despite this book spinning out of control at times and the fact the book could have been 200 pages shorter without taking anything away from the story it was overall a fantastic ending to a truly amazing series. I loved the world Marissa Meyer had created she built a breath taking world full of amazing characters and fantastic story Arcs.
