The Winners Crime by Marie Rutkoski
The Winners Crime is the second book in The Winners Trilogy, if you would like to read my review on Book One The Winners Curse you can read it HERE.
The Winners Crime kicks off right where The Winners Curse ended, Kestrel is set to marry the Valoria crown prince as per arrangement with the emperor to keep Arin and his people alive.
In a sense The Winners Crime is your typical second book in a trilogy, the story is a lot slower as the author lays the ground work for the final instalment and the two main characters spend the entire book keeping secrets from each other and then regretting it at the last minute. For me the angst between the Kestral and Arin was what lost this book half a star, as their interactions began to feel childish in places and I personally didn’t like how it brought down two very strong characters.
Kestrel’s character when not interacting with Arin was fanastic, her character development in this book was great and you start to see just how cunning she can be.
The best thing about this book was the ending and the build up to it, it was absolutely fantastic having Kestrel’s dad find out what Kestrel has been up too and for him to be the one to tell the emperor was fantastic. That cliff-hanger at the end was perfectly crafted and the built up to the final sentence was impeccable.
I can’t wait for the final book and to see where this story goes.
