This series has a unique concept in the sense that it is a high fantasy book set within a dystopian style word.
The Invasion of the Tearling, is the second book in the Queen of the Tearling series and Follows Queen Kelsea and her fight to save her country.
In this book the point of view shifts back and forth between Kelsea and Lily a young women living in Pre –crossing America. The idea of switching back and forth between the two time frames was fantastic. Normally we don’t get to see what life was like before the “Sh*t hits the fan” so to speak. In Pre-crossing America you either have to be a super rich male or life isn’t really worth living. Seeing the Pre-crossing world through Lily’s eyes added an extra element to this story that helped develop a much more complex world.
Kelsea’s character takes a dark turn in this book and I personally loved the change in her. She is fighting her own inner demons while trying to save her kingdom, while dealing with urges and feelings that any other normal 19 year old would feel. This makes her a much more relatable character.
Once again I loved how the author really doesn’t shy away from “Risqué” topics including human trafficking, Paedophilia, rape and abusive relationships. She also takes this to the next level by introducing domestic violence and martial rape she tackles these topics very well and doesn’t make them feel (for lack of a better word) “gimmicky. Again I loved that she address this subjects giving her story a gritty edge.
We finally see some action in this story getting to see what Evil the Red Queen is really made of , the pacing was again a little slow like book one but the world building was amazing especially with the addition of Lily’s story .
