Sentinel by Jennifer L Armentrout
Sentinel was the Fifth and final book in the Covenant chronicles by Jennifer L Arementrout. Needless to say if you have not read this series and you do not want to be spoiled please do not read any further.
Sentinel is packed full of Greek mythology, painful deaths, an amazing final action scene and at times swoon worthy romance. With Sentinel this series has finally reached its conclusion and in all honesty this book was OK but wasn’t the spectacular ending I would have imagined.
As you will probably know from my previous reviews from this series, the Covenant series is not an epic series however it has always been a fun, interesting and somewhat light read. However if I was to take away the emotional attachment I have made with this series, and look at this book objectively its painfully obvious how flawed sections of the book are.
Unfortunately what let this book down was its lack of action, literally nothing happens until the last 60 pages of the book. Rather than focus on building up to the epic end battle at the end of this book (which FYI I LOVED and was hands down the best part of this book), the book spends a lot of time focusing on pointless conversations, plot twists that just didn’t make sense or add anything of substance to the story, a very cheap death and an endless amount of PDA/sex.
Despite its flaws though I didn’t hate this book, I just felt slightly let down by it. That being said there are some fantastic elements to this book that I don’t want to overshadow.
The final fight scene with Alex and Seth was absolutely fantastic and the highlight of the book in my opinion. It was packed full of raw emotion. The scene was powerful and moving and I honestly can’t fault it at all. Piggy backing of this scene was also the scene in which Seth finds out the Gods plans for Alex. Oh my goodness just when I thought emotions couldn’t run any higher, this scene took my breath away and had me reaching for the tissues.
***** WARNING IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE DIVERGENT SERIES BY VERONICA ROTH PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS NEXT SECTION AS YOU WILL BE SPOILED *****
My biggest pet peeve with this book was the “happily ever after” ending. This left me spitting feathers if I am being honest. In my opinion if you are going to pull a Veronica Roth and kill off your main character at least stick to your guns and kill her off don’t find a convenient plot twist and use it to give everyone their happily ever after. It made Alex’s death feel cheap and also pointless.
*** SPOILER OVER ***
Over all I really enjoyed this series. In my opinion it is a fun, fast paced, easy read that I would recommend to most people. However in my opinion the series hit its peak with Deity (book 3).
