Branded by Abi Ketner & Melissa Kalicicki
I received an E book copy of Branded through NetGalley in exchange for a review.
Branded is set in a world in which fifty years ago The Commander came into power and murdered all who opposed him. In his mind, the seven deadly sins were the downfall of society. Branded follows Lexi who is falsely accused of being a sinner, she is sent to the Hole and must find a way to survive.
I think the story was original and is a good start on what could be a very promising series however I do think this book had the potential to be so much more.
This book sucked me in very fast and the first 70% of this book flew by in one sitting and I really enjoyed where the story was heading, however I found as the story continued and the character of Keegan was introduced I found myself becoming detached from the story and the main character Lexi. I found the relationship between Lexi and Keegan to be extremely childish and the writing of the scenes felt very juvenile, to me this made Keegans death at the end meaningless and I honestly didn’t feel anything about him dying.
That being said the first part of the book isn’t without its faults, parts of the world building felt extremely rushed and parts of the story where very predictable. The interactions between Lexi and Alyssa were lovely, heart-warming, heartbreaking and honestly some of my favourite sections of the book. I though these scenes where well written and sucked you deep into Lexi’s head and you find yourself feeling all the same emotions that she is feeling.
The romance in this book was also a little predictable but overall I enjoyed Coal as a character and I think the two characters work well together.
Miss Quinny Rating (3.5 / 5)
