The Kiss of Deception by Mary E Pearson

I will be the first to admit I did not go into this book with high expectations, I have to be brutally honest with you guys…………….I have fallen in love with this book.

The Kingdom of Morrighan is steeped in tradition and the stories of a bygone world, but some traditions Lia can’t abide. Like having to marry someone she’s never met to secure a political alliance.

Fed up and ready for a new life, Lia flees to a distant village on the morning of her wedding. She settles in among the common folk, intrigued when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her

Like I said above I did not go into this book with very high expectations, I expected a flat love story based in a underdeveloped world. Boy was I wrong. Mary E Pearson did an amazing job of creating a love story within a fantasy world. Now granted the world building in this book is not the best I have ever read however it is great, I had a vivid picture of the world and the life these characters lived throughout the entire book.

The author created an amazing female protagonist, Lei is likeable, relatable and kickass all rolled into one. She wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and was willing to make sacrifices for happiness.

The love triangle in the story was amazing, I am not a huge fan of love triangles however the way this one was crafted was fantastic. The romance was beautifully written, it didn’t feel rushed or over dramatic like most YA love story lines tend to be.

The fact that one of the love interests was the Jilted prince and the other was the assassin sent to kill lei was a great twist on this story.  I have to be honest I guessed wrong who was who, I spent the first half of the book convinced Rafe was the Assassin and honestly I was shocked and thrown completely when it was revealed that Kaden was  in fact the Assassin.

The story is well crafted and beautifully written and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great love story set in a fantasy world.

However I must warn you, if you are a fan of high fantasy DO NOT go into this book expecting a lot of action and suspense. The Kiss of Deception is not an action book as I have stated above this is a Love Story set in a fantasy world.
